Overview:
The launch of the Connected Beginnings program was a vibrant celebration of culture and community, successfully bringing together a diverse group of attendees. The event featured cultural performances, workshops, and discussions aimed at fostering partnerships for the coming year. The presence of our ancestors was strongly felt, with Black joy and pride permeating the day.
Event Highlights:
Cultural Performances: The Talbragar dancers opened the event with a dynamic performance, showcasing the richness of Indigenous (Wiradjuri) culture. A traditional smoking ceremony was performed, purifying the space and participants, and setting a positive tone for the day.
Welcome to Country: Aunty Marg delivered a moving Welcome to Country, honouring the traditional custodians of the land and acknowledging Elders past, present and the continuing connection we have as Aboriginal people to land, rivers and community.
Workshops and Activities: - Weaving sessions by Milan Dhiiyaan during the yarning sessions provided participants with an opportunity to engage in meaningful yarns with traditional crafts. - A cultural workshop with Elders offered deep insights into cultural traditions and practices, fostering understanding and respect. Yarning Sessions: Attendees participated in yarning sessions throughout the day, engaging in meaningful dialogues with community leaders and stakeholders about potential partnerships and collaborations in the new year.
Keynote Speech: MLC Stephen Lawrence spoke on behalf of Labor Federal ministers, emphasizing the government's support for the Connected Beginnings program and its importance for Indigenous communities.
Tatum Moore – Connected Beginnings Manager, highlighted the program's crucial role in the community, Emphasising that by working together the community can ensure that children receive the best start in life and school. She also stressed the importance of supporting mothers and families, noting that early intervention and holistic support can help minimise the removal of children and improve Closing the Gap outcomes.
MC – Host – TRRA CEO - Paul Carr – Spoke about the significance of the program and the importance of community and services working together to create a strong foundation for our babies.
Community Engagement: The event facilitated connections among community members, leaders, and stakeholders, encouraging the exchange of stories and ideas. The collaborative spirit was evident, with a shared commitment to enhancing opportunities for Indigenous children and families. Administrative Details: - Surveys and Feedback: Attendees were invited to complete surveys to provide feedback on the event, helping organisers assess the program's impact and areas for improvement.
Media Consent and Sign-In: Media consent forms were made available to attendees, ensuring that participants were informed and agreed to any media coverage. Sign-in sheets were used to document attendance, providing a record of participants and facilitating follow-up communications.
